Following the example set by her father, a retired personal injury attorney, Katherine Burgess Cruz has committed her professional life to advocating for people who have suffered life-altering injuries.
While going to law school was always in her career plans, Katherine initially was open to other practice areas besides personal injury law. However, after gaining experience in those other areas, Katherine’s desire to help injured people — regardless of their ability to afford an attorney — led her to focus on personal injury cases.
At the Deuterman Law Group, she handles automobile accident claims and other personal injury cases for clients who have suffered injuries because of the fault or negligence of someone else. These clients are often dealing with serious injuries with long-term physical, emotional, and financial consequences. The stress and burden of dealing with insurance companies, health care providers and the legal system can be overwhelming for many people, and they need a skilled advocate to help get their lives back on track.
Katherine, who grew up in northern Virginia, joined the Deuterman Law Group in 2024 and works out of the Durham office. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Baltimore School of Law where she earned her Juris Doctorate. Katherine attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the National Public Honors College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She also has a certificate in paralegal studies from George Mason University.
Prior to joining Deuterman Law, Katherine practiced in Wake Forest, N.C., where she represented plaintiffs in employment discrimination cases. Before that, Katherine worked as an attorney with Rabb & Rabb, PLLC in Tucson, Ariz., where she handled cases involving the Federal Employers Liability Act, personal injury, and wrongful death claims. She also has extensive experience in divorce, probate, estate planning and administration, providing comprehensive legal support across a variety of practice areas.
While in law school, Katherine was a staff editor on the University of Baltimore Law Forum. She also was a member of the Jessup International Moot Court Team and won the Best Overall Competitor Award in the Byron L. Warnken Moot Court Competition. She was a member of the Heuisler Honor Society and the Royal Graham Shannonhouse III Honor Society.
As a student attorney with the Saul Ewing Civil Advocacy Clinic, Katherine represented low-income clients in unpaid wage, SNAP benefit, and contract disputes on a pro bono basis.
After law school, Katherine was a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Judge Melissa K. Copeland in Baltimore City Circuit Court, which handles civil and criminal cases.
Katherine also has many years of experience in the service industry with Great American Restaurants, working front-of-house as a server, bartender and in a variety of leadership and coaching roles. The interpersonal skills she gained there are ones she still uses every day as an attorney.
Katherine is licensed to practice law in three states: North Carolina, Arizona and Maryland. She is a member of the N.C. Advocates for Justice.
In her free time, Katherine enjoys growing indoor plants and gardening. She is a self-described foodie who also likes hiking, walking and traveling with her family.
She lives in Durham with her husband, who is an active-duty U.S. Air Force technical sergeant, and her teenage stepson.
