Zach Marquand has been representing working people and their families for more than a decade, litigating cases at all levels of the state court system to ensure his injured and disabled clients receive the maximum financial compensation, full range of benefits and medical treatment they deserve.
As the Deuterman Law Group’s managing workers’ compensation attorney, Zach manages the department’s attorneys at the firm’s five offices and mentors new attorneys. He is recognized as an expert and leader in the field by his peers. He has taught continuing legal education (CLE) seminars on topics including discovery, motions practice, technology in the practice of law and administrative hearings.
Zach is one of a select group of board-certified specialists in workers’ compensation law practicing in North Carolina. The N.C. State Bar, through the Board of Legal Specialization, offers this certification as a service to the public to help them identify lawyers who are most qualified to represent them. Board certified attorneys have demonstrated special knowledge, skill and proficiency in a particular area of the law.
A spirited and hardworking advocate for his clients, Zach has argued cases before the N.C. Court of Appeals to secure workers’ compensation benefits for his clients.
He is a member of the N.C. State Bar and the N.C. Advocates for Justice.
Zach began his professional career as a high school math teacher with Teach for America, working in a rural community in Eastern North Carolina. While he enjoyed working with students, Zach felt drawn to the idea of addressing issues of inequality through the legal system and made the decision to trade teaching for law school.
Originally from Knoxville, Tenn., Zach earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and Latin from DePauw University in Indiana. As a college undergraduate, Zach was the senior captain of the men’s swim team.
After devoting two years to Teach for America, Zach attended law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, he became immersed in pro bono work and spent time volunteering with the university’s Wills Project, the UNC Center for Civil Rights, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and the Southern Coalition for Social Justice.
Zach earned his juris doctor with honors from UNC School of Law in 2012 and was admitted to N.C. State Bar later that year. He remains committed to pro bono work and community service.
He serves on Deuterman Law’s leadership committee for the annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser. He also helps raise money for Samaritan Ministries in Winston-Salem and participates in the law firm’s other volunteer and community efforts.
Zach lives in Winston-Salem with his wife, Catherine, and their three sons.
