Whether it’s volunteering with a local food bank or fiercely advocating for her clients, attorney Janelle Shewmaker has always had a drive to help people in need and to make an impact in her community and in the lives of others.
A personal injury attorney with 15 years of experience, Janelle joined the Deuterman Law Group in 2025. She works in the firm’s Durham office, representing clients with a variety of personal injury cases, including wrongful death, automobile, commercial trucking and motorcycle collision claims. Janelle is committed to getting her clients the justice and compensation they deserve. She believes in guiding clients through the legal process with compassion and transparency.
Janelle, who was raised in New Orleans, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2006, she earned her Juris Doctor degree cum laude from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California.
Janelle began her legal career in Tennessee, working alongside and learning from experienced personal injury trial lawyers, and joining them in the fight against some of the country’s largest corporations and insurance companies. Janelle later moved to North Carolina and worked briefly as a bodily injury claims adjuster while awaiting admission to the North Carolina State Bar. Her insurance adjuster experience has given her unique insight into how “the other side” operates and how to maximize the value of her clients’ personal injury claims. Upon admission to the North Carolina State Bar, Janelle worked in private practice handling personal injury matters before joining Deuterman Law Group.
In her personal and professional life, Janelle has a strong commitment to service. She volunteers with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern Carolina. She also volunteers with El Centro Hispano in Durham. Recently, Janelle discovered her love for personal coaching and completed a year-long coaching program – which has been tremendously beneficial for her deserving clients, who often seek guidance while coping with the challenges that come from being seriously injured.
Janelle is a member of the N.C. Bar Association and the N.C. Advocates for Justice.
In her free time, Janelle enjoys hiking, cooking, cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes, and listening to live music. She lives in Raleigh with her daughter.
