With more than seven years experience working for the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, attorney Shawn Ferguson has a deep understanding and knowledge of VA Disability Law and how claims are handled. He now uses that experience and insight on behalf of his veteran clients at the Deuterman Law Group.

At the Board, Shawn worked under a veterans law judge, adjudicating veterans benefit appeals claims. During that time, he reviewed and drafted decisions in hundreds of claims.

Shawn joined DLG’s VA Disability team because he wanted to be able to more actively advocate for injured and disabled veterans who are seeking benefits for their service-connected injuries and conditions. He has seen firsthand the hardships injured veterans experience as they’re applying for benefits and how the process can drag on for years.

He works out of the firm’s Wilmington office, and focuses exclusively on VA Disability.

Shawn earned his juris doctorate from Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Va., in 2014. While in law school, he served as law review associate editor for the Appalachian Journal of Law and staff editor for the Appalachian Journal of Natural Resources Law. He was also treasurer of the Student Bar Association.

A native of West Virginia, Shawn attended Marshall University, where he earned his Regent’s Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in biology.

Prior to his work in VA Disability law, Shawn worked for The Aviation Law Firm in Annapolis, Md. There, he gained experience in contracts, FAA enforcement actions and aviation-related wrongful death claims. He also briefly worked at the Kurland Law Group in Rockville, Md. as a part-time associate working in the field of bankruptcy.

In his free time, Shawn enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, running, fishing and golfing.

He lives in Wilmington with his wife and their two dogs and two cats.
