Understanding Comprehensive Auto Insurance Coverage

Hi, my name is Chase. I’m an attorney here in the personal injury department of the Deuterman Law group. And today I’m going to talk to you about comprehensive coverage, what comprehensive coverage is. Now comprehensive coverage is additional or optional coverage you can get for your vehicle that covers any damage caused by non collision events or events that are out of your control.

What Comprehensive Coverage Actually Includes

But what does that mean? Well, that is acts of vandalism, theft, if you accidentally hit an animal while you’re driving, and acts of nature. Now let’s go over three possible scenarios that can cause damage to your vehicle. And we’ll see if comprehensive coverage will cover it. In the first, your vehicle is parked out in front of your house.

Auto Accident Scenarios: What Coverage Applies?

  1. You go outside in the morning. You get in the car, and you start driving off, and you hit a tree. Would that be covered by comprehensive coverage? No, that’ll be covered if you have any collision coverage.
  2. The next scenario is if you’re outside in your vehicle and someone runs into the back of your vehicle while you’re sitting there, would that be covered by comprehensive coverage? No, that’ll be covered by the liability coverage of the other party. Or if you have your own collision coverage.

When Comprehensive Insurance Covers Vehicle Damage

  1. But what if you’re sitting outside of your vehicle and a tree limb falls and cracks your windshield? Now, that would be covered by comprehensive coverage because that was an act of nature and out of your control. If you have any questions about what damage to your vehicle is covered by what coverages.

Who to Ask About Your Auto Insurance Coverage

It’s always good to consult an attorney. Or you can reach out to your local agent, as they might have answers to what coverage your policy provides.
